Rich tributes paid to Dr Ambedkar

From Parliament in New Delhi to Manatralaya in Mumbai, the father of India’s Constitution, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was paid rich tributes on his 122nd birth anniversary on Sunday.
On the occasion, governor of Maharashtra K. Sankaranarayanan, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and mayor Sunil Prabhu released a Chaityabhoomi postal stamp at Chaityabhoomi to honour Dr Ambedkar. Mr Chavan also inaugurated the reinstalled statue of Dr Ambedkar in Nagpur, while the mayor and local leaders — cutting across party lines — came together to honour the leader.
Mr Chavan, along with Union aviation minister Ajit Singh, presided over a function to unveil a life-size statue of Dr Ambedkar. The two leaders later paid tributes at Deekshabhoomi, where the dalit leader had embraced Buddhism in 1956. A large number of organisations also paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar at Deekshabhoomi and at Samvidhan Chowk on the busy Nagpur-Jabalpur Road.
Recalling Dr Ambedkar’s association with Nagpur, Mr Chavan said, “It was an emotional attachment and therefore, he picked Nagpur for the historic conversion in 1956. An appropriate memorial is being built at Indu Mill land in Mumbai and the government is seeking necessary clearances from various agencies. Only constructing a memorial was not enough, but we must follow the path shown by him in maintaining peace, harmony and non-violence.”
In Nashik, mayor Yatin Wagh, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP from Nashik Sameer Bhujbal, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLA Vasant Gite and corporators of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar near the Shivaji Road locality. At the NMC office, the mayor and others garlanded a portrait of Dr Ambedkar, while dalit political parties like the Republican Party of India (RPI) and the Dalit Panthers also paid tributes. Busts of Dr Ambedkar were also put up in decorated pandals at different squares of the city to mark his birth anniversary.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
