Rise in PhD aspirants for management

The outcome of the PhD entrance test (PET) declared on Wednesday has indicated a huge rush of aspirants opting for doctorates in management studies.
With nearly 20 per cent of the aspirants choosing corporate and industry related topics, officials say it is a new trend and the University of Mumbai is doing its best to encourage the same by inviting more experts to take up guideship with the University.
Speaking about the phenomenon, Dr M.G. Shirhatti, chairman, board of studies in management courses said, “The trend is probably due to better career prospects.” Pointing to the competitiveness in the job market, he added, “People are always trying to improve their qualifications to go up in their respective fields of work. With the race for management jobs, having a doctorate under your belt can always be beneficial.”
Out of the 2,300 aspirants who cleared the PET on Wednesday, more than 500 aspirants have either opted for doctorates in management studies (240), banking and finance (104), commerce (95), trade and trading techniques (68) and other industry related subjects.
Dr Shirhatti also pointed to the fact that the university was also taking steps to fulfill this sudden spurt in demand. “Previously, finding guides was a difficult task, but now we have been inviting experts to take up guideship and it has seen a good response,” said Dr Shirhatti.
He added that with vice-chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar stressing on increasing research, this is a golden period for aspirants to pursue doctoral studies.

BJP mayor faces threat from NCP
Umesh Mohite
Mumbai, June 28

BJP’s Dhule mayor Manjula Gavit has lodged a written complaint of harassment against NCP workers with home minister R.R. Patil.
While promising to give adequate protection to the mayor, Mr Patil has also assured to apprehend the miscreants and take necessary action against them.
A delegation of the BJP women’s wing met Mr Patil on Thursday in reference to an attack on the house of the mayor on June 23. According to the delegation, NCP men allegedly threatened the mayor on June 18, and later attacked her house. The BJP has claimed that NCP’s ex-corporator Vinayak Shinde was behind the attacks. Based on previous complaints, preventive action was initiated against Mr Shinde. However, he was immediately released on bail.
The delegation demanded that Mr Shinde, who already has 15 cases of extortion, assault, threatening, etc, be booked under the MCOCA.
