Security equipment purchases were necessary: Patil
Rural development minister Jayant Patil, who was the state home minister for 10 months after the 26/11 terror attacks, on Thursday said that the purchases for the police department were made expeditiously, as it was the need of the hour.
Responding to the Opposition’s allegation that there wereirregularities in the purchases after the 26/11 terror attacks, the minister said that the department would have bee n criticised if there were any delays in procuring equipment. The Opposition has alleged that all the equipment bought after the 26/11 attacks were procured at inflated rates. Home minister R.R. Patil had assured that the government has agreed to hold an investigation into the allegations.
Earlier this week, BJP MLA Devendra Phadnavis had pointed out that no proper procedure was followed during the purchase, and while there was much ado about Force 1 and CCTV cameras, those are not yet operative.
Mr Jayant Patil said, “After the terror attacks, suggestions were pouring in from all quarters. We could not ignore any of the valid suggestions and at the same time follow the time consuming process.”
He added that if there is an inquiry into any irregularity, then the guilty will face the music.
Responding to the allegations of corruption against the police department, Mr R.R. Patil had said that in case of procurement of bomb disposal suits and belts, action had already been initiated and those who made payments without authority are being dealt with.
