Senior PI Kokil dismissed for extorting from hawkers
The Maharashtra director general of police Sanjeev Dayal has dismissed senior police inspector Sanjeev Kokil, following allegations of corruption against him.
Before being dismissed, Kokil, who was the former senior police inspector of the MRA Marg police station in south Mumbai, had been transferred to Amravati. The transfer came in the wake of allegations of extortion against the officer. Kokil allegedly extorted money from hawkers, shopkeepers and residents of Musafirkhana area in south Mumbai.
Kokil ran into trouble in January 2011, when a few shopkeepers from Musafirkhana approached Mr Dayal, who was then the Mumbai police commissioner, alleging that the senior inspector was misusing his powers to harass people in the area.
Kokil came under severe criticism when the victims furnished documentary evidence against him in the form of phone transcripts, where he is heard demanding an amount of `10,000 from each of them.
Back then, Mr Dayal had slapped a departmental inquiry against Kokil and transferred him to the Amravati district. After the inquiry was completed, Kokil was found guilty of corruption charges and dismissed from the police force.
When contacted, Kokil said he was not guilty and had been made a scapegoat for not towing the line of his senior and minister of state for home (urban) Arif Naseem Khan.
“I did not follow the orders of an IPS officer and had investigated a case honestly, which affected the interests of Mr Khan. He is responsible for my dismissal,” he said.
Rubbishing allegations made by Kokil, Mr Khan said, “Many complaints pertaining to police matters come to me. I forwarded Kokil’s file to the concerned authority, just like I do with any other complaint.”
