‘Serious’ drought to be focus of state budget: CM

Describing the current drought situation as “serious,” CM Prithviraj Chavan on Friday said that the focus of the state budget beginning from March 11, would primarily be on drought-relief measures.
While speaking at a meeting of MPs from the state, ahead of the budget session of Parliament, Mr Chavan said that the state would have to tackle the drought situation for the next five to six months.
Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, who is also an NCP MP from the Madha Lok Sabha constituency in the Solapur district, suggested that the drought-affected people from Marathwada, who are migrating to Mumbai, should be given temporary ration cards.
Citing minimum wages given in Kerala under the EGS scheme, Mr Pawar argued that the minimum wages should be revised. Currently, Kerala gives `390 per day to every labour, while in Maharashtra, the minimum wage is `145 per day only. Apart from the 37 MPs, home minister Sushil-kumar Shinde, Union MoS for IT Milind Deora, were also present at the meeting.

The Byculla police has arrested four people, including a software engineer, who allegedly duped a Mazgaon-based businessman to the tune of `25 lakh, on the pretext of getting him good profit returns if he invested money in their software designing project.
The accused lured the victim by claiming that they would design the software in India at a cheaper production cost and would sell it to a Dubai-based company on a very high rate to earn hefty profits. However, the accused neither designed any such software, nor did they return the victim’s money.
The accused have been identified as Mohammed Inayatali Beguwala (35), Faraz Ali Khan (25), Ibrahim Khalid Khan and Akaash Ashok Mishra. The quartet was produced in a local court on Tuesday that granted them bail. The accused were arrested on the
complaint of Anil Jayanatilal Jain (38), a resident of Kadwani Chembar, Love Lane, Mazgaon. Mr Jain deals in the import-export business of kitchen-home appliances and has his office at Sussex Industrial Estate, Byculla.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
