Sewage line work comes to halt due to cr
Even as the Archaeological Department of India (ASI) halted the construction work of the Powai-Veravali water tunnel, another major BMC project has hit a roadblock due to a red signal from Railway authorities. Citing lack of permission, the Central Railway (CR) has stalled the laying of sewage line near Chunabhatti railway station.
According to civic officials, following complaint filed by the Railways, contractual workers carrying out the work were also arrested. The workers have now been released after paying a fine, but the project work is yet to resume.
As part of its sewage disposal project, the BMC has undertaken work of laying an underground line along the Sion-Kurla railway tracks by using the micro-tunnelling technology. However, the Railways authorities in December 2012 objected to it and said that no permission was taken for the work. Terming it illegal, they took action under the Railway Security Act and apprehended two workers.
According to the civic officials, the Railways has even seized the machine used for micro-tunnelling work, due to which the project work has been stalled for the last month-and-a-half.
“The project is very important as far as sewage disposal is concerned. We are in discussion with the Railway officials and they are expected to give the permission soon,” said a senior official from civic sewage department.
Standing committee chai-rman Rahul Shewale said, “The Railway authorities had given permission to lay the sewerage line, but the Railways safety board has taken objection to it.”
