SoBo buildings to get garbage chutes
The BMC has decided to implement its garbage chute project in South Mumbai’s Thakurdwar area. The project is aimed at collecting garbage from narrow and inaccessible house gullies between buildings.
In this project, chutes will be installed along railings of staircases in the building, from where garbage will be collected in a dustbin at the ground floor. People can open the outlet of the chute at their floor and dump in the garbage; a civic conservancy staff will clear the garbage collected in the dustbin. The civic body has chosen D-Ward for the project; the areas under D-Ward include Thakurdwar, Gamdevi, Bhuleshwar, Girgaum.
“There is a building in the same ward, which has installed a chute on its own; we have asked the ward office staff to visit that building and see how that design could be replicated,” said additional municipal commissioner, Mohan Adtani.
Garbage chutes are common in highrise apar-tment buildings and are used to collect the entire building’s garbage at one place. Often, the bottom end of the chute is placed directly above a large waste receptacle. This makes garbage collection more efficient.
According to civic officials, the house gullies, which are very narrow, are the most common spots for residents to dump garbage. The problem is more common to South Mumbai, which has several buildings close to each other, having only narrow lanes between them.
A budget provision of `25 lakh has been made for this year to install these chutes; the BMC will be floating tenders by the end of the month.
