Speeding Merc knocks down 5, owner traced
A Mercedez Benz, driven at 100 kmph, knocked down five pedestrians in the early hours of Monday in the Four Bungalows area of Andheri (west). All the victims are friends and said to be out of danger, but two of them have suffered serious injuries on their hand and legs.
The five victims, all roommates, were walking on the side of the roa,d when the Benz knocked them down. The car also rammed into a police barricade, but managed to escape from the spot.
During the panchnama, the police officials found a part of the number plate, which fell off due to impact of the accident. The vital clue led the police to Benz owner, Falgun Shroff, who deals in furniture goods and resides in the Lokhandwala area.
Incidentally, the police did not find Shroff or his family members at his residence. They tried calling on his mobile number, but he had switched it off. After a few hours, the driver of Shroff claimed complete responsibility for the accident. The officials are checking their call records and trying to find CCTV footage from near the spot to determine who was in the car at the time.
The Versova police has registered a case under Sections 279, 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 134 A and B of the Motor Vehicles Act for fleeing from the spot without rendering help to the victims.
The victims have been identified as Shashant Singh (25) and Janardhan Singh (28), who have suffered injuries on their hand and legs, while Vishal Sharma (22), Abhilash Vyas (26) and Mahesh Vange (28) have been discharged. They are all aspiring actors and scriptwriters.
