State gets time from hc to file reply
The Bombay high court on Friday granted time to the state to verify and reply to the rejoinder affidavit filed by activist Pravin Wategaonkar, questioning the validity of the SIT formed by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan to investigate into the irrigation scam.
A division bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and K.K. Tated was hearing the PIL filed by social activist Wategaonkar, seeking a CBI probe against ministers and bureaucrats, allegedly involved in a multi-crore rupee irrigation scam. Mr Wategaonkar also demanded to know if the SIT has any punitive powers. He informed the court that the SIT comprised persons who have knowledge about water-related issues. However, he said that they do not have in-depth knowledge about the punitive action.
The bench adjourned the matter to March 11, after directing the state to file a reply to the rejoinder affidavit. In addition to this, another activist and former journalist Ketan Tirodkar had also filed a PIL in the same matter. However, the division bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar recused itself from the matter.

John seeks bail, victim says he is a threat
AGE CORRESPONDENT
Mumbai, Feb. 15
Film professional Jerrit John, who was arrested on charges of attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend Aryanka Hosbet-kar, moved the sessions court again seeking bail on Friday. He had reportedly thrown chemical acid on his ex-girlfriend to avenge her.
John had also moved the sessions court in December last year, seeking bail stating that he would not be required by the police as they have completed the investigation. However, he had later withdrew the application. Against John’s move, Hosbetkar moved an intervention petition objecting to his bail application. “ We have moved the petition, stating that the victim will be directly affected by the bail plea. If he is granted bail, John poses a threat to the victim, her mother and other family members,” said Hosbetkar’s lawyer, Advocate Faiz Merchant. He added that the court had taken the intervention petition into consideration and marked February 25 as the date of next hearing.
In November last year, John had allegedly hurled a chemical on his 26-year-old girlfriend Hosbetkar.
