‘State how many FDA labs operating in Maha’
The Bombay HC on Wednesday asked the Maharashtra government to state as to how many laboratories of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are functional across the state and to take necessary measures to strengthen these laboratories.
A division bench of Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice A.P. Bhangale was hearing a PIL filed by the S.M. Joshi Memorial Association Trust, seeking direction to the state to devise mandatory tests to be carried out by all dairies across Maharashtra within three months.
Advocates Manmohan and Rajamohan Amonkar, appearing on behalf of the litigant, along with advocate Jane Cox, informed the court that out of the 14 district public health laboratories, only four such labs are functional. The petitioner informed the court that as per the information available on the FDA sites, there is only one such functional lab in the state — located in Pune.
The bench then asked the state to confirm the number of operational laboratories and also directed it to take steps to strengthen these labs.

Chain-snatcher held for raping teenager
AGE CORRESPONDENT
Mumbai, feb. 27
A 23-year-old has been arrested for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl over the past two years in the Malwani area of Malad. The accused has a criminal background; the police has also arrested his father for abetting the alleged crime.
The Malwani police said that the arrested accused Wasim Shaikh is a resident of Malwani Gate no. 6, where he lives with his father Ibrahim Shaikh (45). The victim lives in the nearby area and had fallen in love with Wasim.
On the pretext of marrying her, Wasim maintained a sexual relationship with her since she was barely 16. It is learnt that Wasim had started assaulting her for the past few months and finally abandoned her. The victim then approached the Malwani police station on Tuesday and registered an FIR under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC against Wasim.
While recording the statements of the victim, the police learnt that Shaikh too was aware that his son was torturing the victim. He was also aware that his son had maintained a physical relationship with the victim since she was a minor. The police has arrested Shaikh under Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC. In 2012, Wasim had been arrested in a few theft cases, including chain-snatching.
