Cong ends MLC nominations at 3 candidates
age correspondent
Mumbai, July 16
Admitting that there is trading in the elections to the state legislative council, MPCC president Manikrao Thakre said that the Congress wants to end it by not announcing a fourth candidate for polls to 11 seats in the upper house.
The MPCC chief speaking on Congress not filing nominations for its fourth candidate stated that all four major parties have filed nominations as per their strengths. Congress, with 82 MLAs voting, was sure of getting three MLCs elected with the requisite quota of 25 first votes as cut-off for each seat.
“Each party is short of the required quota. We thought as the ruling party, we should take responsibility in stopping malpractices,” said Mr Thakre. He further stated that the Congress had always thought that it had the support of 16-17 independent MLAs.
Even, during the last MLC elections, Congress had got four candidates elected.
However, with four out of the independent MLAs supporting the Congress signing the nomination form of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) Jayant Patil, the Congress thought it better not to have a fourth candidate.
