Stepfather held for raping girl on 2 occasions
A 38-year-old stepfather was arrested for reportedly raping his 21-year-old stepdaughter in Goregaon (west) on two occasions while her mother, a domestic help, was away at work. The matter came to light after the girl, out of shame, slashed her wrist with a kitchen knife.
Assistant inspector, Mahesh Ingale of Goregaon police said, “We had registered a case of rape and criminal intimidation against the accused on April 9 and launched a manhunt. Acting on a tip-off, we arrested him on Monday. He will be produced in court on Tuesday.”
According to the police, the accused works for a small construction company and lives in Yeshwant Nagar area
in Goregaon (west). Nearly a decade ago, the accused married the 39-year-old mother of the victim Pratibha (name changed).
Pratibha’s mother separated from her husband over personal reasons and since then Pratibha stayed with her real father in Mangalore. She would often visit her mother in Goregaon.
However, in December and January, Pratibha’s stepfather forced her into having sex with him while her mother was out at work. He then emotionally blackmailed Pratibha to be silent on the ordeal threatening to divorce her mother. He also threatened to kill Pratibha, on one occasion.
Pratibha kept quiet, but few days later, out of shame, she slashed her wrist.
When her mother returned home, she rushed Pratibha to a hospital. Subsequently, Pratibha confided in her mother, who approached the police.
