Stressed API shoots self over family dispute
An assistant police inspector (API) with the Chunabhatti police station shot himself in the jaw on Wednesday afternoon while on duty. The bullet exited through the side of his head and he is currently being treated at a private hospital in Chembur. According to police sources, the officer was experiencing stress after a familial dispute with his wife and daughter.
The incident took place at around 3 pm on the second floor of the Chunabhatti police station where API Chandrakant Mahajan’s (42) cabin was located. A few officers and the staff at the police station, including Mr Mahajan, had reportedly enjoyed a biryani meal together when he retreated to his cabin. He then pulled out his service firearm and shot himself on his right jaw from below. The bullet exited through the side of the skull; Mr Mahajan was immediately rushed to the Sethana-Surana Hospital in Chembur.
“His condition is critical but he is reported to be stable. We haven’t registered an attempt to suicide case as of now. An accidental case has been filed,” said ACP Milind Bhise. A senior officer said that Mr Mahajan was experiencing problems in his marriage.
His house was found locked. The police is now trying to trace his wife.
