Student held for abetting crime
The Mira Road police in Thane rural arrested a 20-year-old SYBCom student for abetting a crime that involved her accomplice, a conman who bought an apartment worth `75 lakh in her name.
Acting on a tip-off, the Virar police on Thursday arrested the accused Payal Kamble, who lives in Nallasopara and handed her over to their counterparts in Mira Road police station as the case is registered with them.
“Karande bought a flat in Kamble’s name and was arrested for abetting the crime. She was produced before a magistrate’s court and remanded to our custody for a day,” said an official from the Mira Road police station, on the condition of anonymity.
Kamble is a friend of the 35-year-old accused Yogesh Karande, who was arrested in December last year for fraudulently running a company that duped 68 persons to the tune of `3.5 crore. Karande along with another arrested accused Sarika Dutta, (45), ran the business for about a year, promising customers flats at cheaper rates compared to the market price.
They were running a company named “Real Acre” and operated from a rented room at a building in Mira Road (east), which falls in the jurisdiction of the Mira Road police station.
The duo used to demand 30 per cent on the flat’s market price in case of booking them in advance. The duo collected the huge amount, but failed to provide flats to their customers at the promised rates.
Consequently, after realising that they were conned by the duo, the customers approached the police. An FIR under several sections of forgery and cheating under the Indian Penal Code was registered against the duo in December and subsequently both the accused were arrested.
