Students issued wrong degrees
The Pune University has issued wrong degrees to its graduating students in the recently held convocation ceremony.
According to the students, while the University has misspelled names and used the wrong gender on the certificates, it has also provided Science degrees to Commerce graduates.
Speaking about the mistakes in their degree certificates, Sheela Gaikwad, an Arts student said that she was surprised when her certificate mentioned her name with the title “mister” instead of “miss”. “There was a mistake in my name too, but that could have been a typographical error. But changing the gender is absurd,” Gaikwad said.
Prasad Kulkarni, a Commerce student, was even more shocked when he received his degree. The certificate states that he has cleared the final year exams from the Science stream, while he had been studying in the Commerce stream and had given his Commerce exams last year.
“This is ridiculous. How can such a goof-up take place? The University is playing with our careers. I had to submit my certificate to my employers to get my job confirmed. Unfortunately, it will now be delayed,” said Kulkarni.
Sampada Joshi, controller of examination (CoE), Pune University said that the University had initiated an inquiry in the matter.
She added that it was not as big an issue as it was being made out to be. “We have assured the students that their corrected certificates would be made available to them at the earliest,” said Ms Joshi.
