Swine flu claims fifth life in Pune
Swine flu, which has already claimed four lives in Pune, claimed it’s fifth victim on Monday morning. Shriange Paigudhe, 60, who was a high-risk case with presentation of diabetes and hypertension among his symptoms, succumbed to the disease.
Since March 1, there have been as many as 74 cases that have tested positive for swine flu, with 25 of these positive cases admitted to hospital on Tuesday. The 74 cases are inclusive of areas like Pimpri-Chinchwad and other adjoining areas. Out of these 25, five of them are currently on the ventilator in the Pune district. Of these, five, two are in Pune city — one in KEM Hospital and another in Prayag Hospital. Both these patients remain in critical condition.
Dr Shyam Satpute, H1N1 nodal officer for the Pune Municipal Corporation, said, “The total figure since the beginning of the monthstands at 63 in Pune city, with 37 patients admitted. We have treated 26 patients on an OPD basis; two people are on the ventilator and we have recorded five deaths so far. We also successfully treated 13 cases, all of whom have been discharged, while 17 others have been quarantined.”
The five people who succumbed to the H1N1 virus were also high risk cases, Dr Satpute said.
