‘Take passports till case resolved’
Faraaz Dharamsey, who lost his father in a 2007 hit-and-run accident, has submitted a letter to the deputy commissioner of police and the Marine Drive police station that the passports of the accused in the case be taken into police custody.
One of the accused, Umer Basar, had hired a dummy driver to save his brother, who was involved in the case and was a minor at the time.
“Considering the fact that the accused Basar has disposed off his properties in India and currently resides on a rental basis, one cannot rule out the possibility that he may flee from India at any point of time to evade arrest. They have dodged the law for the five years, but now we want the Mumbai Police to ensure that the Basars do not flee the country, and therefore, their passports should be taken into police,” said Mr Dharamsey. In another development, a civil contractor Mohammed Zahid Sayed has filed a case against Basar with the Mumbai police’s Economic Offences Wing. “A case was registered in March against Umer Basar from Zain Constr-uction and his associate Naveed Penwala regarding the ill-fated Sadaf Manzil that has collapsed in 2005 and needed to be redeveloped. Investigations are presently underway,” a EOW police officer said.
However, Mr Basar said, “This is an attempt at extortion and I have already filed a complaint with the anti-extortion cell on the issue.”

48-yr-old killed, cops suspect missing servant
Age Correspondent
Mumbai, July 8
The police initiated inquiries into the murder of a Bhayander resident whose naked body was found on Sunday morning. The deceased’s recently employed servant, who has been missing since Sunday, is the chief suspect in the murder.
According to the Bhayander police, the deceased, identified as Sundaraj Jacob (48) ran a famous food stall near the Jain temple in Bhayander. He used to stay alone in his flat in Trishala apartments on the Kanji Swami Marg.
“On Sunday morning, one of Jacob’s neighbours saw that the door to his flat was ajar, which he found suspicious. On going inside, he saw Jacob lying naked in a pool of blood and immediately raised an alarm,” said an officer with the Bhayander police.
As Jacob’s body had some serious injuries to its face, the neighbours informed the police instead of taking it to the hospital. The police conducted a panchnama of the spot, taking into its custody a grinding stone smeared with blood, which is suspected to have been used to bash his head. Jacob’s body was then sent for post-mortem, and the police set about making inquiries after registering a complaint of murder against unidentified persons.
“Investigations so far have revealed that Jacob had employed a servant a couple of days ago to help him out with domestic chores. His details were not registered with the police, and Jacob’s neighbours do not know anything about him other than that he was from Madhya Pradesh,” the officer added. Jacob’s family in Andhra Pradesh has been informed.
