Tech glitches worry IDOL aspirants

The admission woes at the University of Mumbai continue as website issues are causing numerous problems for students wanting to pursue degree courses through distance education. While students claim that they are unable to download forms and take printouts for submissions, the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) has said that it is doing all it can to ensure that students do not have to pay late fees.
According to Nimit Jha, a student who wanted to opt for a distance education course after failing to secure a seat in the college of his choice, there was a lot of confusion regarding the IDOL admission process and as there were no clear instructions many students looking for admission to the first year after HSC were forced to keep inquiring with the institute for the procedure.
“As admission to colleges required online registration, many of us had applied online, but after failing to get a seat we decided to opt for distance education. However, we were not sure whether we had to register online again, hence we spent atleast two weeks trying to figure out the procedure,” said Mr Jha.
After the institute declared that online registration for IDOL was not required, students then had another challenge on hand, getting the website to open, downloading forms and taking printouts for submission to the institute.
“The IDOL webpage takes too much time to load and even if it loads its difficult to get the admission form page to open.
After managing to fill the admission form online when we try to take printouts the page either refuses to print or it is difficult to get the print option,” said another student, Seema Jagdale.
The issue has now been taken up by management council and senate members whom the aggrieved students met and explained their situation.
“Due to the problems students will not be able to submit their forms within the stipulated time and will have to shell out late fees for late submission. We met the IDOL director and asked him to resolve the problems in favour of the students. We have demanded that the deadline for submission be extended,” said Dilip Karande, management council member and member of the advisory council of IDOL.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
