Tech-savvy colleges putting attendance records online
With colleges becoming more tech-savvy, college life for students may soon become school-like, as more and more colleges are providing attendance details of the students online.
According to college officials, this is one of the ways of disciplining students who think joining college means freedom to bunk lectures that ultimately reflects in their performance.
Speaking about the new initiative, Krishna Tiwari, coordinator, Thakur College, Kandivali said, “After receiving numerous inquiries from parents as to whether their children were attending college regularly, the college
decided to put an end to the daily inquiries by providing attendance details of students on the college website. Since starting this initiative, not only has the attendance improved, but the number of calls from parents have reduced drastically,” said Mr Tiwari.
On the other hand, students are not too happy with the system and say that it is taking away their freedom and colleges are treating them like school-going children.
Dilip Karande, management council member, University of Mumbai, said that though the system was harsh on students, it was necessary as it helped parents keep themselves abreast of their child’s whereabouts.
“The system does not necessarily work against the students, in fact, it will help parents understand the fallacy of sending their children to far off colleges if their child is not present in the first lecture. In general, the system is good and should be adopted by all colleges,” said Mr Karande.
