Teen, weak in Maths, tries to kill self
Frustrated at being scolded by his parents and teachers for being weak in Mathematics, a 15-year-old boy attempted suicide by consuming poison. However, timely help from some student activists ensured that the teenager was saved.
Student activists found Vipul Asaria (name changed to protect identity), a resident of Andheri (east), in a critical condition at Marine Drive on Friday afternoon.
Shrikant Jagtap, a member of Vidyarthi Bharti, a student organisation, said, “We saw the boy vomiting at the side of the road. Passersby just looked on and did not do anything to help him.”
On realising that Asaria had consumed poison, they immediately took him to the Marine Drive police station, from where the boy was rushed to GT Hospital and his family was informed.
“All we came to know from the boy’s incoherent ranting was that he had decided to end his life, as he was unable to bear the taunts and scolding of his family and teachers for not being good in Mathematics,” Mr Jagtap said.
A police official from the Marine Drive police station said that although initially the father was reluctant to come for his son, but when he was told that the boy could die, the family and teachers of Siddhivinayak School reached the hospital.
“The boy had consumed an entire bottle of mosquito repellant, which was flushed out of his system. He is now out of danger,” said a police official. As the boy is a minor, the official said the police had decided not to register any case against him.
When asked about the drastic step taken by his son, the father said, “My son is weak in Mathe-matics, but is very stubborn, because of which he took this extreme step. We will try to counsel and support him.”
