The Thane campus of the University of Mumbai is set to be operational by next year. The government is in the process of starting its first post graduate management course (MBA) from the next academic year.
A provision of `11 crore has been made for construction of the administrative and academic building. The announcement was made by the higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
The issue was raised by NCP legislator Jitendra Awhad through a calling attention motion. “To construct a campus of the University, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had made available six acres of land six years ago, but no work was done in the last so many years,” Mr Awhad said. “When will Thane city have its campus?” he asked.
Another NCP legislator Vallabh Benke demanded action against the officials for the delay, while Prashant Bamb (Independent) claimed that the said land has been encroached by tabelas (cowsheds) and other structures.
Replying to the allegations and denying any encroachment on the land, Mr Tope said that a security officer has been posted to protect the site and 50 per cent of construction work of the compound wall is also being completed. “The rest of the work will be completed in a short time,” he said, adding, “For the construction of academic and administrative buildings, the state has made a provision of `5 crore in this year’s budget; `6.5 crore will be made available in the budget for 2014-15.”
Mr Tope admitted to the delay in setting up of the University campus. However, he assured that both the buildings would be completed within a year.
