Thief who stole temple silver held
The crime branch unit-11 on Thursday arrested a person for allegedly stealing religious articles made of silver from several Jain temples of the western and northern suburbs. The police recovered silver articles weighing around 3.6 kgs from the accused. These articles were stolen from five temples. The police suspects that the accused may have committed similar burglaries in other temples and have also arrested the jeweller who used to buy the stolen booty from the accused.
The arrested accused have been identified as Dilip Dharmendra Mishra alias Dipu, 30, and Shivlal Ruplalji Patel, 29.
“On Thursday, our officers received some information and a trap was laid at Borivali. Mishra was arrested and the police found a 100-gram silver plate from him after searching him. Mishra confessed of burgling five Jain temples — two in Kandivali, two in Goregaon and one at Kasturba Marg,” said deputy commissioner of police (detection-2) Ambadas Pote.
On February 11, religious articles made of silver weighing around 2 kgs were found missing from a Jain temple in Kandivali. Subs-equently, an offence was registered with the Kandivali police and unit-11 of the crime branch initiated a parallel probe in the case.
The police recovered a total of 3.6 kgs of silver from the accused, worth `1.92 lakh in all.

Bookie attacked in Ulhasnagar; accused escape

An man alleged to be a bookie was on Thursday afternoon attacked with sharp objects near his home in Ulhasnagar by unknown persons who fled after the incident.
Mohandas Khatri (54) alias Pappu Chikki, an alleged cricket bookie is currently admitted to a local private hospital, where his condition has been declared as critical.
The incident took place at around 4 pm at Khatri’s residence at Dhan Guru Apartments in the Camp 4 area of Ulhasnagar. Khatri was at home when three persons called him below his building and started chatting with him. The accused then assaulted Khatri on the neck and head with sharp objects, suspected to be knives and choppers and fled from the spot. The police were immediately informed and Khatri was first taken to Manas Hospital in Ulhasnagar and later transferred to Kalyan Hospital at Khadakpada. The Vitthalwadi police have registered a case of attempt to murder agsainst unknown persons. Meanwhile, sources said Khatri has named two people, whom he reportedly had an altercation with on Wednesday night. Khatri was at one Chandni Bar in the Camp 3 area when he had an argument with two persons.
Senior police inspector Chandrakant Deshmukh said, “The victim is currently stable and officers are waiting to record his detailed statement. There were also a few eyewitnesses below the building whom we have identified. He has sustained two slash wounds each on his head and hands. We have learnt that the argument took place over a monetary deal.”
