Tope assures N-E students’ safety
Higher and Technical education minister Rajesh Tope will be visiting colleges to reassure students from the Northeast about their safety in the state. Fearing for their safety, people from the northeastern states, students in particular, are fleeing to their hometowns.
The recent spate of violence in Assam has had repercussions all over India, in states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka there have been incidents of threats and assault on people too. “It is the state government’s responsibility when it comes to assuring the safety of students from northeastern states,” said Mr Tope.
The minister has already instructed as many as 13 vice-chancellors of different universities to make personal efforts to reassure students.
“Every year, as many as 8,000 to 10,000 students come to Mumbai and Pune. It is our state duty to ensure that they
are safe and are treated well in our state,” said Mr Tope.
Pledging for the students’ safety in Mumbai, Mr Tope said, “The state has always accepted the responsibility of the security of the students. Rumours are being spread through SMSes, etc. causing fear amongst students.”
