Unicef grants Rs 9 crore to BMC
In a bid to enhance the quality of education in civic-run schools in the city, United Nations international children's emergency fund (Unicef) on Tuesday granted Rs 9 crore to the Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (BMC).
Unicef also signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BMC as part of the school excellence programme.
The programme aims at improving the quality of learning of all its students, increasing attendance, reducing drop-out rates, increasing pass percentage, establishing an activity-based methodology of teaching and learning through well-developed toolkits, training teachers and headmasters.
Unicef will provide technical monitoring and financial support. "Through these funds BMC will try to improve the standard of education in its schools," Mayor Mrs Shraddha Jadhav said.
Over 4.25 lakh students study in the 1,327 civic-run schools across the city.
