University to decide fee hike
The management council of the University of Mumbai on Thursday gave its approval for the formation of a Shikshan Shulk Samiti to look into the xvarious requests by colleges, in order to allow them to increase fees for various courses. The requests have mostly been with regard to increasing the fees for the traditional Arts, Science and Commerce courses. According to a University spokesperson, the fees had remained unchanged since 2009, and colleges have been asking for the hike for the past two years.
Speaking about the decision, a management council member said that the decision to allow colleges to increase the fee would be based on the findings of the committees that would take stock of the various facilities and amenities being provided by the colleges. For this, two separate committees would be formed to visit all the colleges offering courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law and self-financed degree courses.
“The committees will start their work soon, and the increase in fees will be made applicable only from the next semester,” said the member.
Pointing to the fact that while previously the fee hikes had been uniform across all colleges, this time it would have
variations. “Fee hike will be permitted based on the parameters laid down by the University. It means if a college fulfills all
parameters to the satisfaction of the committee, they would merit a better fee increase than those colleges that do not fulfill all criterion,” said member, adding, “It will be mandatory for all colleges to provide subsidised education to three per cent of its students who are financially poor as well.”
