UPSC: Sena hails restoration of language papers
Welcoming the restoration of two qualifying papers in regional languages in the UPSC exams, the Shiv Sena on Thursday said the Centre should consult states in the future if it wants to tweak the pattern of the elite examinations.
MLC Neelam Gorhe, who initiated a discussion on the issue in the upper House on Thursday said, “If any such changes are to be made, they (UPSC) should consult state MPs and higher education officials. Or else, it will give the impression that the regional languages are being marginalised.”
As per the latest decision, the English essay paper of 100 marks in the 2013 Civil Services Main Examination, which raised a nationwide controversy, has been dropped and the earlier practice of two qualifying papers in any Indian language and English has been re-established. Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s said that English was also necessary as it is the language of communication. “Imag-ine if the state was to get an IAS officer who cannot speak English. I do not think this would be in the state’s interest,” he said.

Mumbai, March 21
The NM Joshi Marg police has arrested a 43-year old man for allegedly molesting a woman security guard at BMC’s ward office in Elphinstone on Thursday. The accused, who allegedly threatened the victim and used vulgar language, has been identified as Shivprakash S. Tiwari. According to the police, on Thursday at around 12.30 pm, Tiwari had come to the BMC’s G-South office at Elphinstone for some work. For some reason, he started shouting at a few employees.
“This led to a heated argument between him and some government employees. The 32-year-old victim, who was posted as security guard there, intervened. Tiwari pushed her, abused her and used vulgar language. He then touched her inappropriately. The victim, with the help of other security guards, caught hold of Tiwari and brought him to the police station,” said an officer, on the condition of anonymity.
