Varsity reverts to old exam method
A week after the protest by college principals against the University of Mumbai decision to start the e-question paper system, the University has decided to revert to the old method.
It has decided to send question papers of traditional courses like TYBCom, TYBSc and TYBA by the old way. However, colleges offering engineering, BMM, BMS and other courses will receive question papers through the new system.
Pointing out the difficulties in implementing the e-question paper system, Dr T. Shiware, principal Hinduja College and chairman association of non-government college (ANGC) principals, said that in the absence of funds provided by the University, it was extremely difficult for colleges in rural areas to get the facilities in place. “They included having internet connections, printers and secure computers,” said Dr Shiware He added, “It is easy for colleges in the city to implement the e-question paper system. However, in rural areas students barely manage to pay their fees, and at times colleges have to waive it. In such a scenario colleges cannot afford to have the computer peripherals. The colleges had objected to the announcement made by the University last week.”
Following the protest, the University consulted the board of examination (BoE), which suggested the implementation of the e-question paper system only for professional courses. “TYBCom, TYBSc and TYBA question papers will be sent through the old method,” confirmed Dr M.Z. Farouqui, director IT and communication, University of Mumbai.
