The governor’s office has called the vice-chancellor of University of Mumbai on Monday to give an explanation about the expulsion of three women employees who had complained of sexual harassment and molestation against two professors from the physical education department of the University.
According to Raj Bhavan officials, the governor wants to know about the case after Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray apprised him of the injustice meted out by the University.
“The governor was surprised to know that the University had terminated the services of the women who had complained against the professors. He was told about this in writing by Mr Thackeray, who visited Raj Bhavan on Friday,” said an official.
The official added that the governor immediately asked for the vice-chancellor to give an explanation regarding this and to see if the women can be reinstated. Following a complaint to the University by one of the women, who had alleged that professor Nilesh Lohar, had come out of the shower without any clothes on while she was present in the staffroom, the University asked the women welfare department to investigate the matter.
Even as investigations were on, two other women employees also alleged harassment by Lohar as well as another professor Bapu Chougule.
Meanwhile, the two professors who had absconded after the complaints were lodged against them, turned themselves in after two months and were released on bail. Since then, the University has suspended them.
Vice-chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar said that the registrar, Mr
Kumar Khaire would be going to meet the governor. “I cannot divulge details of the explanation and the University will clarify its stand on the issue, as well as the status of the employment of the three women,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
