Will height of view barriers be reduced?
If the Mumbai Metropol-itan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has its way, the height of view barriers will be reduced from seven to five km on its 22 km-long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project. View cutters will need to be installed on the sealink due to security issues.
Officials from the MMRDA have confirmed that the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) officials have asked them to install view barriers over a stretch of around seven km.
If the view barrier is not installed, people travelling on MTHL, will get an unhindered view of BARC’s nuclear installation.
“Seven km is too long, we would want it to be shorter by around two km. Rounds of meetings will be held with BARC authorities to discuss the issue; we hope that our counterparts agree to our request,” said an official from the MMRDA.
Back in June 2008, The Asian Age had reported that the state government was considering installing view cutters or having a high wall on the MTHL.
In 2008, the project was handed over to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corpora-tion. However, the plan will now be executed by the MMRDA.
The Indian Navy, too, has raised concerns over the ambitious sealink that will connect Sewri with Nhava, as it has plans to set up sensitive installations on Elephanta Island.
