Woman alleges fraud against in-laws
A woman from the Thane district has alleged fraud against her in-laws, after they got an imposter to withdraw the harassment case she had filed against her in-laws. The police has arrested her sister-in-law and is on the lookout for the mother-in-law and the imposter.
According to the Central police, Ulhasnagar, Amreen Sheikh (23) has been fighting a harassment case against her in-laws and the case has been going on in the court since 2007. However, on Monday her mother-in-law and sister-in-law went to the court with an imposter, who claimed she was Amreen. The imposter told the court that she wanted to have an out of court settlement. However, when Amreen visited the court two hours later, the public prosecutor was shocked to learn that the imposter had taken him and the court for ride.
“My brothers-in-law and their wives troubled me even after I filed a complaint with the police. My in-laws have even threatened to kill me if I do not withdraw the case. I now stay with my parents in Karjat,” Amreen said. Her husband Zulfikar works in the Gulf, and she has a three-year-old son with him.
Amreen’s in-laws had filed an application in her name last week, claiming that she did not want to fight the case anymore. The application bore Amreen’s forged signature, and a hearing was set for the application on Monday.
“On Monday afternoon, a woman posing as Amreen testified that she wanted a settlement and was given a further date. The woman then left the court with Amreen’s in-laws. However, two hours later, Amreen herself reached the court, and requested copies of some documents that she had filed earlier. This surprised the public prosecutor, who told her that a woman claiming to be her had asked for a settlement only a short while back,” said Mr Suresh Mohite, police inspector, Central police station.
Amreen subsequently registered a complaint with the Central police, and a team was sent to the court to conduct inquires. Incidentally, Amreen’s sister-in-law Khushnuda was found in the court premises by the police and was immediately arrested.
“Amreen’s mother-in-law Saira, brothers-in-law Shakeel, Shahnawaz and Sarfraz, another sister-in-law Farzana and the imposter are currently wanted by the police. A team was sent to their residence in Ambernath, but the house was locked. Further inquiries are on,” said Mr Mohite.
