Woman held for `38-lakh theft
The Shivaji Park police has arrested a woman in a housebreaking case where valuables worth `38 lakh were robbed from a flat in the Dadar area.
The accused was arrested with the help of an alert neighbour, who had a glimpse of the woman on the fateful day and later identified her from the police records. The police then traced the woman and arrested her, however, no recovery of stolen goods has been made from her. The investigators are also looking for her husband, who they suspect was involved in the crime.
The arrested woman has been identified as Reshma Mohammed Ali Rangrez (26) alias Shabana, a resident of Ghatkopar.
According to the police, on January 29, there was a robbery in Arun Jayant Narvekar’s flat on the second floor of Seeta Sadan, at Senapati Bapat Road in Dadar. Mr Narvekar was out with his family, when burglars broke the lock and stole his passport, along with gold and silver ornaments worth `38 lakh. A case of housebreaking was then lodged with the Shivaji Park police station.
During investigation, the police learnt that an alert resident of the building, Keshav Kumbhare (name changed), had seen an unknown woman escaping from the building on the fateful day.
The police then showed Mr Kumbhare a few pictures of women criminals in their records and he identified Shabana’s picture.
“When the police reached the Ghatkopar address given in the police records, investigators met Shabana’s sister Shabina there. They then got in touch with her brother and based on the information provided by him, raided a place in Ghatkopar and arrested Shabana,” said a source.
She confessed to her crime and during her questioning, her husband’s role was also discovered, added the source.
