Woman kills self after son fails in exams

Reportedly depressed over her son’s failure to clear his engineering exams in the first attempt, a 50-year-old woman committed suicide near her Bhandup residence in the early hours of Friday morning.
According to the police, the deceased, Jayshree Sawant dived into Shivaji Talao at around 4.30 am on Friday. The sound of her falling into the lake attracted the attention of some residents in the area, and they raised an alarm. Sawant was pulled out of the lake in an unconscious state and rushed to the nearby hospital where she was declared dead before admission.
“According to the inquiry conducted so far, Sawant had gone into severe depression after her son failed in his final year engineering exams. She was proud that her son was going to be an engineer, and his failure hit her hard. All her relatives have given statements confirming this as the reason for her taking such an extreme step,” said Mr Shrirang Nadgauda, senior police inspector, Bhandup police station.

Sewri drowning: BMC to contest case
Age correspondent
Mumbai, Oct. 5

The BMC has given a clean chit to assistant municipal commissioner of the F-south ward and other civic officials in the drowning case of a 14-year-old boy at Sewri. The civic body has also decided to contest the police complaint filed against civic officials.
Last week, Mohammed Saeed Ansari died after falling into a 15-foot-deep trench dug by the BMC to fix a leakage in the water main at BDD Chawl, Sewri.
After an inquiry, the BMC has given a clean chit to the engineers and ward officer Bhagyashri Kapse. The civic body has also decided to contest the police complaint of culpable homicide, which was filed against Ms Kapse and an executive engineer. “Filing an FIR against Ms Kapse is of no use, as the repair work was undertaken by the water department and not the ward office,” said M.M. Adtani, additional municipal commissioner.
