Women journos meet governor

Governor K. Sankaranarayanan on Saturday assured women journalists that he will take up the issue of women’s safety in the state with chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. The governor had earlier convened a meeting with the chief minister late on Saturday evening.
Following widespread protests against the gangrape of a photojournalist that took place on Thursday, a delegation of women journalists representing the print and electronic media met the governor on Saturday and expressed the problems that they faced on a daily basis.
Addressing the delegation at Raj Bhavan, the governor said that apart from discussing the issues with the chief minister, he would also take up the issue of enhancing the safety of women in local trains, with Union railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge.
The journalists voiced their concern on safety of women in Mumbai and the adjoining areas. They informed the governor that the compartment reserved for women in local trains don’t have policemen during the night. They also spoke about the rising instances of harassment and sexual assaults in the city.
