Women RPF reach out to a lakh
Western Railway’s (WR) initiative involving women railway police force (RPF) to raise the level of alertness among commuters has reached out to a lakh women travelling in locals.
These women constables board the locals at peak hours and announce what to do in cases of emergency and other crisis situations. The drive was launched on January 13 this year to educate female passengers by making them aware of the special Helpline number 1311 meant especially for them.
Dania Kabir, who travels between Churchgate to Bandra everyday said, “I was highly impressed by this initiative. Many of us do not know on how to contact the railway police during an emergency. I hope we will be able to reach them more frequently and they will act immediately.”
The special team comprising a head constable and five constables is a part of “Saurakshini” squad and led by sub-inspector Gayatri Patel. The newly formed squad was carved out by dismantling the G 77 squad. The team has six best lady constables who are fluent in Hindi, English, Gujarati and Marathi.
“This effort is to raise the level of alertness and spread awareness among passengers. We have got excellent response from commuters and would like to carry on for a few more weeks,” said Rajendra Rupnawar, senior divisional security commissioner of the Mumbai RPF.
