Youth hanging from moving bus killed
A 25-year-old youth died after he rammed into a stationary bus, while trying to hold on to a moving BEST bus, which was overtaking the halted one, on Tuesday. The driver of the bus fled from the spot fearing mob fury.
The deceased has been identified as Amit Babasaheb Sarode, a resident of Bhandup. Sarode was employed at the advertisement section of a Marathi daily.
According to the police, the incident took place near Azad Maidan on Mahapalika Road on Tuesday. “Sarode was trying to catch a moving BEST bus that was going towards Metro junction. He managed to climb on the footboard of the bus and was hanging on the door. Since another BEST bus was at the bus stop, the driver of the other bus tried to overtake it. He probably did not see Sarode hanging from the door. While the driver was overtaking the bus, Sarode was hit by the rear of the halted bus and fell off,” said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.
He sustained grievous injuries to his chest and head. Locals rushed him to GT Hospital, where he was declared dead. The driver of the moving bus, Navnath Bapu Shinde (42), fled from the spot fearing that the angry crowd would beat him up.
He surrendered at the police station in the evening and was subsequently put under the arrest. Shinde will be produced in court on Wednesday. “We have registered an offence against the driver of the BEST bus under Section 304-A and other relevant sections of the IPC,” another officer said.
