Yuva Sena’s absence from protests raises eyebrows
The youth wings of all major political parties, except the Yuva Sena, on Saturday agitated against the state government and burnt the effigy of home minister R.R. Patil in light of the gangrape of a 22-year-old photojournalist. Surprised by the absence of the Yuva Sena, political observers questioned the Shiv Sena youth wing’s priorities.
A 22-year-old photojournalist interning with a magazine was gangraped in Shakti Mills in Mahalakshmi, while her 21-year-old male colleague was tied up on Thursday evening. Parallels have been drawn with the December 16, 2012 Delhi rape case.
Youth from the society have expressed harsh comments on the failure of the state government on social media like Facebook and Twitter. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar have taken the issue seriously and instructed the home ministry to look into it carefully. Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena and the Samajwadi Party demanded the resignation of Mr Patil.
The BJP young brigade Akhil Bharatiya Janata Party (ABVP), Congress’ National Union of Students of India (NSUI) and Youth Congress, Rashtravadi Yuvati Congress, Nationalist Youth Congress and Shiv Sena protested against state government.
ABVP burnt the effigy of Mr Patil at Yashwant Natya Mandir in Matunga, while BJP protested outside Bhoiwada magistrate court. NSUI used social media like Facebook to register their protest and Yuvati Nationalist Party protested at police stations across the state.
The youth brigade of the Shiv Sena was not seen at any agitation. Led by Aditya Thackeray, Yuva Sena was busy organising a state-level inter-collegiate competition, Prabodhan Karandak at Kalidas Sabhagriha in Matunga.
