This band of young men may not be as hot property as they were a few years ago but they still managed to rock the charts with their latest pop offering, Hands All Over. Currently on tour in the US, Maroon 5 is busy keeping the crowds on their feet and their tempo high.

Ask Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine if the group ever expected such success in their career and he says, “I think in the initial years of our career as a band we went through the same thing everyone does. It’s like you don’t know what you are going to do with your life, even though you seem to be on a path. We put out a record and it didn’t do very well. So we got kind of discouraged and we didn’t know if we would stay together. There was a lot of indecision; but we knew we were a good band so we decided to stick it out.” Luckily, he adds, the albums that followed did well with people all over the world.
An interesting aspect of this band is that most of the band members knew each other from school and having grown up together and as friends. The band chose ‘Maroon’ as their name as it was the name of a girl whom the boys had a ‘collective crush’ on. The other members of this Grammy Award-winning band are James Valentine (guitars), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards), Mickey Madden (bass) and Matt Flynn (drums).
So how easy or difficult is it for the band members to be together nearly 24 by 7 and perform? Explains Adam, “We all work as a team. Be it a performance or be it writing a song. Sometimes, while writing a song, it happens from the ground up. Sometimes it’s an idea that the band works on and I later jump in and write a melody to it. It is very varied though.”
The musical journey for Maroon 5 has been an exciting one so far. Having sold more than 15 million copies since their debut in 2002, this band from L.A. is known for its pop rock music. Adam believes that their musical journey has been amazing and beautiful so far. “It was so amazing and so beautiful. It was good fun. We aren’t really sure if we would like any kind of change,” he says.
As far as their latest album goes, Adam is happy with their collaboration with Mutt Lange. “He’s a great guy. He really pushed us for this album. No one has ever pushed us so hard and its great for us actually,” he gushes adding, “We have also collaborated with Lady Antebellum for our song Out Of Goodbyes. It is a very different song. We have used a banjo is this song.”
The lead singer promises that their next album would be very different. Any plans of coming to India? “Only time will tell,” signs off Adam.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
