Diamond forever

This is for all dance music buffs. Antiquity Club Fusion is bringing the most sought after DJs from the US and the UK for a five-city tour across India, promising to set dance floors on fire. And first up was the sultry DJ Diamond, who kicked off the ACF tour with a joint performance with DJ Whosane. The result: A thumping combination of house music with some Bollywood numbers.

With the name, looks and persona to be a Bond girl, DJ Diamond says she was born in a very music-oriented family and developed a passion for dance as well. “My family loves music, but I never learn to play any instruments or underwent any training,” she says, revealing that she almost became a sports physician! “I studied sports medicine in college, but I quit because I just loved music so much. It was my sole passion and now it has become my profession.”
The wave of house music that was spreading across the UK in the 90s made Diamond look at DJing as an option to carry her passion for music further. “I was visiting the UK at that time, and even when I returned home to the US, the fascination with house music continued,” says Diamond. Since the last 10 years, she has been spinning discs across 35 countries, and while touring is hectic, it has also had a positive impact on the artiste. “It gives me a chance to sample various cultures. It’s incredibly thrilling because every place is different and has a beauty of its own.”
House music may not be known for its soul-stirring ability, but Diamond says she loves spinning tunes that are fun and upbeat that allow people to dance, shout and generally have a blast. “I play a lot of house, funky and trance music that’s very uptempo,” she says. However, her music varies depending on which country she is playing in: “The audience in one country may love trance while those in another may like some other genre.” To ensure that her audience has a gala time, no matter which country they’re from, Diamond “reads” the crowd in advance. “In order to know more about the country I’m visiting, I contact DJs to get a sense of the kind of music the country likes. I also speak to the promoters and I do a lot of other research,” she says.
Diamond believes DJing is as important a profession as a therapist’s, saying, “We help people forget everything and allow them to get lost in the world of sound. It’s easy because music is one language spoken all over the world.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
