Making India dance to her tunes
DJ Eve Carey, who toured India recently as part of the Ministry of Sound World Tour, had only good things to say about her experience. “India is amazing! I loved Bengaluru. It was my first time playing in Mumbai and the crowd was fantastic. I didn’t really get to see the city as I was on a hectic schedule,” says the UK-based DJ, whose mixes consist of big room pumping house and energetic music, much like her personality.
It is this style that helps her rev up a crowd almost instantly. “Sometimes a crowd can be hard but I’ve never really had them not like my music. You just have to find the things they like,” she says. Eve certainly found what the crowd in India liked after playing in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru. She even remixed a special track Goddess with Indian elements for the crowd in India.
Eve started DJing when she was 17 and at a time when female DJs were a rarity. Her global sound has now seen her rise to one of the top female DJ’s in the world and she has played with the likes of Tiesto and Farley Jackmaster. “I first started with a job in a recording studio. I would help out and answer the phone. They had a set of decks in the corner, so I started to learn how to DJ. I never thought it would be hard because I was a female. I just loved DJing so much!” says Eve.
Eve got her big break in 2008 with Charly’s Angelz, a DJ duo consisting of her and Miss Behavin. The two made history by becoming the first two international DJs to play at a party in Syria. “We haven’t played together for a while but Charly’s Angelz are based in Ibiza so we try to get together and play whenever we have time,” says Eve.
Collaboration with Indian talent is also something Eve would like to do. While in India, she played with Bengaluru-based DJ Ivan and the two gelled well together. “He was amazing. I hope we can do something together one day,” she says. On the international front, Eve admires the people power of the Swedish House Mafia. “I love all the Swedish House Mafia DJs. They produce and DJ some of the most fantastic big tunes that drive crowds crazy!” she says.
Eve who has taught many aspiring DJs at workshops in Birmingham, wouldn’t mind training Indian talent too… on one condition: “It is something I would do when I have time!” she says.
