Soulful Tribute
On the evening of June 17, when guests took to their seats in Indian Islamic Cultural Centre auditorium, they knew it wasn’t going to feel the same as it used to be when famous ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan Khan would take to the stage.
Yet, they all gathered to pay tribute to the late singer at an evening organised by Urdu Press Club International.
As a mark of respect, Janiva Roy, a playback singer from Kolkata, rolled out some famous Mehdi Hassan songs like Rafta Rafta wo meri hasti ka saman ho gaye and Zindagi mein to sabhi pyaar kiya karte hain.
Speaking about Mehdi Hassan, Janiva said, “I am a fan of Mehdi saab since childhood when I started singing. I first sang his ghazal when I was 14. My only sorrow in life is that I could never attend his concert or meet him personally.”
A guest, B.L. Khanna, said, “I had attended Mehdi saab’s concert once in Delhi. He was so good that his voice is still etched in my memory. I feel so sorry that I could not hear him sing in person after that,” he says.
Another guest Madhu said, “This is the first event to be organised in his memory in the city. I could not have missed it.”Artists Uma and Aruna Vasudev too attended the evening.
