Astride wheels of fire
Whenever we are angry we feel a certain unstoppable rush within us. What is this rush that we feel? In yogic terms it can be described as an imbalance because where there is balance there is harmony and peace. Therefore, to be able to manage anger we need to balance our chakra system. Clairvoyantly, these chakras (or wheels) are seen as whirling centres of energy. You may understand chakras like
rotating exhaust fans that suck in fresh and throw out used
prana.
Whenever you feel your insides getting knotted and your face getting red with anger, practise a simple kriya irrespective of the time and place. Called the Chakra Santulan Kriya, this aids in redistribution of prana from one area of the body to another such that the body gets back into balance. This is necessary as inadequate or excessive prana in any chakra is the cause of imbalance, which gets manifested in the form of anger and other emotional problems.
The seven major chakras are as follows: Mooladhar, at the base of the spine; Swadhishthan, two inches above the Mooladhar; Manipoorak, at the navel; Anahat, at the centre of the chest cavity; Vishuddhi, at the Adam’s apple area of the throat; Ajna, the master chakra, at the point between the eyebrows; Sahastrar, the chakra above the head.
To do the Chakra Santulan Kriya sit in vajra asana. Close your eyes and take a full yogic breath (which is a combination of abdominal and thoracic breath), release the breath and take your palms to the Mooladhar chakra. Begin inhalation and simultaneously move your palms up, stopping momentarily at each chakra, from Mooladhar to the Swadhishthan, Manipoorak, Anahat, Vishuddhi and Ajna. Then extend your palms towards the skies and be aware of your Guru with “Aum Shri Gurave Namah Aum”. Hold the inhaled breath and then slowly start exhaling, bringing the palms down, again stopping momentarily at each chakra, till you come to Mooladhar. Then once more take a full yogic breath. This completes one cycle of this kriya. A set of seven such cycles would complete one set of Chakra Santulan Kriya.
The key points to note in this kriya are that one cycle of hand movements has to be synchronised with one breathing cycle. And remember not to strain yourself under any circumstances. Build up very slowly. The first few times, maybe for a month, you will find that your hands are moving very fast up and down. It is okay, as you will slowly and steadily increase your capacity with regular practice.
This kriya results in an immediate balance within you. In addition to keeping your anger under control, this simple kriya will also give a natural glow to your body and remove all tiredness. To be in a constant state of balance and bliss you can then go for Sanatan Kriya.
