Tricks to blow your mind

In my previous column (Mind over matter, December 1), we started an exploration of the mind, to understand the source and cause of various problems that beset us. Now that we know what the problem is — anxieties and worries — the question that arises is, “How can we solve it?”
Our present attempts to find solutions are unsuccessful because instead of investigating the root causes of the malady, we treat the symptoms through temporary remedies. The trouble starts all over again as we are not investigating the root cause, but are content with superficial treatments both at the physical and psychological level. Through drugs we try to change the chemistry of the body and create a temporary stability of the mind. Or, through auto-suggestions and setting right environmental factors, the problem is temporarily solved.
A story goes that a person had a strong conviction that he was a rat and was afraid of cats! He was promptly referred to a psychiatrist who, after several sessions, convinced the patient that he was not a rat, but a man. After the last session, the patient walked out of the clinic with confidence. However, within a few minutes the patient rushed back in utter fright to the astonishment of the doctor. The reason for his retreat was that he saw a cat crossing the road, bringing back his earlier fear that he was a rat. The doctor again repeated that he was not a rat but a man, and yet the patient asked: “I know I am not a rat, but does the cat know it?” Such are our troubles and woes.
According to the cardinal teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, a problem cannot be solved by remaining at the level of the problem, but only by rising above it. The vision of Arjuna, who was confused about his goals and basic duties, was raised when he was made to view the problem from the highest standpoint — that of the Self (atman), beyond the sense organs, prana (life-sustaining force), mind and intellect, i.e. from the standpoint of Pure Consciousness. The dialogue between Arjuna and Lord Krishna continues till Arjuna says: “My delusion has ended and I have regained my balance. I shall do as advised by you.” Creativity of the mind is developed by lifting it to a higher vision.
The Bhagavad Gita is a subjective science and it is like a mirror. We see without and correct within, as we see ourselves reflected in the mirror. Our problems in life are reflected in the Bhagavad Gita through Arjuna’s confusion about his duties, his anxieties, frustrations and attachment to relations and results.
For a deeper enquiry into our problems, we need to have a proper understanding of our mind and how to deal with it. That we shall consider next time!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
