Panel seeks regulator for ports
A Parliamentary panel has asked the government to establish a single regulator with quasi- judicial mandate for settling disputes for all the ports.Suggesting the amendments to the Major Port Trust Act, 1963, the Committee of Estimates, which presented a report on the ministry of shipping, has also asked the government to provide a level-playing field for the country’s ports. “A level-playing field should be there for all ports, under a single regulator with a quasi-judicial mandate for settling disputes,” the panel said in its report. At present, the ports are divided into two categories: major ports, and minor and intermediary ports.
