Vodafone gets HC flak in I-T case
The Mumbai High Court on Wednesday dismissed European telecom major Vodafone’s plea challenging the Rs 12,000-crore tax plus penalties demand of the income-tax department. Vodafone, through its group firm Vodafone International Holdings, in 2007 bought Hutchison Telecom India Ltd’s (HTIL) stake in Hutchison Essar in 2007 for over $11 billion from CPG, a company registered in the Cayman Islands. It represented a 42 per cent stake. The issue being arg-ued was if the I-T department can ask a foreign company to pay taxes in India if it is buying up an overseas holding company with an Indian business.
