Bengaluru is the best city in India offering the highest quality of living. The capital city of Karnataka with rank of 140 is, however, way below European cities of Vienna, Zurich and Geneva the top three cities in the worldwide rankings of cities for the quality of living.
The Quality of Living Survey 2010 by Mercer, which was released on Wednesday, saw Indian cities — New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata — trailing Bengaluru with ranks of 143, 144 and 145 respectively. Chennai was at No. 153 in the list of 221 cities.
The rankings in the survey have been based on a point-scoring index, ranked against New York as the base city, with an index score of 100. Vienna tops the list with 108.6 points. New York is in position 49 on the list.
Indian cities had roughly same scores — Bengaluru scored 64.9 points, New Delhi managed 63.8 points, Mumbai was close with 63.6 points and Kolkata with 63.2 points. Chennai trailed the India city list with 62 points.
Singapore at 28th spot with 103.5 points is the top-scoring Asian city, followed by Tokyo at 40th spot with 101.4 points. Shanghai is the best city in China with a score of 82 points and rank of 105. Iraqi capital of Baghdad, ranking 221, rem-ains at the bottom of the list with score of 14.7 points. The other low ranking cities in South Asia include Islamabad in Pakistan at 179 with 51.1 points, Lahore with 51.5 points at 181st spot.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
