Anish’s sculpture is an icon for Middlesbrough
Mumbai-born sculptor Anish Kapoor, who is building a tower in London to celebrate the Olympic Games, launched Britain’s biggest sculpture at Middlehaven Dock in Middlesbrough.
The £2.7-million sculpture called Temenos is an elliptical steel structure, described by Kapoor as “two rings and a pole.”
The 50-metre high and 110-metre long sculpture weighs 156 tonnes. The circular ring is 32 metres in diameter and weighs 56 tonnes, the elliptical ring is 28 metres by 16 metres and weighs 24 tonnes and the mast is 45 metres tall and weighs 56 tonnes. The sculpture also has 8,200 metres of stainless steel cable, which weighs 20 tonnes. The sculpture is in the area where Tata-owned Corus had to mothball its steel plant since the beginning of this year.
