Couture week ends on cherry, fragrant note for couture week

The Synergy One Delhi Couture Week finally came to an end on a cheery and fragrant note, courtesy Rohit Bal. There was high fashion, glamour, Bollywood, gossip and everything that qualifies it to be an event worth writing.

It was quite melodramatic when designer Gaurav Gupta sent out models holding mannequins. A mushroom-shaped structure at the orifice of the stage added to the drama. Soon an array of fluid drapes, gowns, pleated one-shoulder pieces, embellished corsets with fitted lehengas and skirts in sari silhouettes were seen on the ramp followed by pinned jackets, churipants, saris and jumpsuits in the hues of pink, off-white, orange, green, yellow and pristine white. Satin hems, French laces, chiffon, sheer and net were extensively used to create a look that was complemented by the dramatic eye makeup. The highlight of the collection were the reindeer-like horns as headgears, butterfly brooches and ornate bracelets.
Next and the last in the row was Rohit Bal with his opulent collection, which is any bride’s dream wear before she takes the plunge. The show area for Gudda’s show smelt divine as he had tonnes of jasmine flowers strewn all over the place. The idea was to create the mood for the pursuit of peace amidst soothing piano symphony and folk melodies. Billowing smoke along with the sensual aroma emanating from the virgin buds captivated the audience even before they had a taste of high-street fashion.
Gudda dipped his threads in the hues of gold, copper, peacock blue to adorn lehengas, saris, shararas, sherwanis, jackets, overcoats and corsets. The magnificent display had the jaws dropping. And before long, the reverie was broken when actor and Gudda’s muse Arjun Rampal sashayed down the runway in a black T-shirt with “showstopper” written on it. His grand entry met with a loud applause and clicks of the shutters.
He reminisced, “Walking for Rohit has always been wonderful. He is the one who discovered me in a nightclub, gave me a great platform to start off and gave me lot of confidence. He has taught me a lot about fashion and I can never say no to him.” Talking about his collection Gudda said, “This collection was about peace, ecstasy and feeling good from within. I want shanti to be the order of this world and I want to be one with shanti.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
