Female condom with teeth to prevent rape
A doctor in South Africa has designed what she claims is a new female âcondom with teethâ aimed at preventing rape.
Dr Sonnet Ehlers has created the female condom, called Rape-aXe, some 40 years after she met a devastated rape victim who was like âa breathing corpseâ.
âShe looked at me and said, âIf only I had teeth down thereââ, Ehlers, who was a 20-year-old medical researcher at the time, recalled in an interview with âCNNâ. âI promised her Iâd do something to help people like her one day.â
Now, 40 years on, Rape-Axe is born.
The condom has jagged teeth-like hooks that latch onto a manâs penis during penetration. Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it â a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make arrest.
âIt hurts, he cannot pee and walk when itâs on. If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... However, it doesnât break the skin, and thereâs no danger of fluid exposure,â the doctor said. Dr Ehlers has been distributing 30,000 free condoms under supervision during the World Cup period. âI consulted engineers, gynecologists and psychologists to help in the design and make sure it was safe,â she said.
After the trial period, theyâll be available for about US dollars two a piece. âThe ideal situation would be for a woman to wear this when sheâs going out on some kind of blind date or to an area sheâs not comfortable with,â Ehlers said. Critics, however, say that the female condom is not a long-term solution and makes women vulnerable to more violence from men trapped by the device. Itâs also a form of âenslavementâ, said Victoria Kajja who is a fellow for Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Uganda.
âThe fears surrounding the victim, act of wearing the condom in anticipation of being assaulted all represent enslavement that no woman should be subjected to.â
