Handloom, tie-dye get glam on Day 1
If the audience was disappointed by the lack of starry faces during the morning and afternoon shows on Day 1 of the Lakme Fashion Week, the late evening shows soon put that right. Vikram Phadnis’ show opened with a video montage of the Bollywood stars he’s dressed over the past, setting the tone for what was to follow.
While Karisma Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha (who refused to pose for photographers at the start of the ramp, as most celebs do before taking their seat), Natasha Poonawalla, Arbaaz Khan, Neha Dhupia and Neil Nitin Mukesh graced the front row of Vikram’s show, it was the Arora sisters —Malaika and Amrita — who stole the limelight as his showstoppers.
As for the clothes, Vikram seemed to have channelled the collective vibes of Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi Mukherjee (both of whom are missing from this edition of Lakme Fashion Week) into his line of lehengas, saris and ethnic menswear. So while there were heavy handloom dupattas, kurtas and skirts with lots of copper-toned gota work, there were also floral patterned saris and odhnis, with a delicate line of embellishment around the edges.
In stark contrast was the “Save The Air” line by master draper James Ferreira. Ferreira stepped in at the last minute, in place of Manish who reportedly had to back out of Lakme Fashion Week due to his film commitments, and played to his strengths with a collection that was dramatic in terms of drapes and patterns.
Tie-and-dye and bandhini prints played out against maxis, asymmetric and one-shouldered dresses with a counterpoint provided by a few starker off-white creations.
“I want to raise awareness regarding the quality of air we breathe,” James said, a message that Lakme Fashion Week attendees took to heart.
