Indian-origin doctor gets 12 years in jail for spy watch abuse

An Indian-origin doctor found guilty of using a secret camera inside his wristwatch to record his abuse of female patients at his surgery has been jailed for 12 years by a British court.
Davinder Jeet Bains, 45, had admitted 39 sex offences at Swindon Crown Court while he worked as a general practitioner at a medical practice in Royal Wootton Bassett in southwest England.
During sentencing on Thursday, Judge Douglas Field told Bains he had breached the trust patients put in their doctor “in the most grievous way”.
“You are a disgrace to the medical profession. You of all people will be aware that the relationship between a doctor and his patient is of fundamental importance in the practice of medicine. In this relationship the doctor is placed in a very high position of trust and the patient is entitled to expect the doctor to discharge that duty with the highest standard. This is particularly so when a female patient consults a male doctor on intimate matters,” Judge Field said.
Detectives investigating the shocking case had likened the watch used by Bains to something out of a James Bond movie and also found a large number of video clips of “intimate examinations” dating between July 2009 and June 2012.
The court heard a large number of the victims, when questioned by police, felt “violated” or “molested” at the time by Bains’ actions.
According to the BBC, two of his patients had complained about his behaviour before he was arrested.
The doctor’s activities were finally uncovered after a complaint from a woman who thought she had been filmed.
Police raided the Tinkers Lane Surgery, where they found the wristwatch and later found more than 360 video clips.
Bains’ defence lawyer, Rex Tedd, said the accused wanted to express “regret” at his actions.
“It was confined to a period in his life when his marriage collapsed because of his sexual inadequacy and he was self medicating inappropriately,” he said.
The court heard he committed offences against 27 women, aged from 14 to 51.
Bains has now been added to the sex offenders register for an indefinite period and has been banned from owning any equipment that can record digital video or entering Royal Wootton Bassett.
He qualified as a doctor from Mangalore University in 1993 and became a general practitioner in 2007 and has been practicing in the UK since. He is currently suspended by the country's General Medical Council.
